Positive Behaviour Support

At Recruit, Connect & Care, we recognise that behaviour is often meaningful and influenced by a person’s environment, experiences, and needs.

People use the behavioural skills available to them to achieve desired outcomes, often relying on responses that have been effective for them in the past. At times, the ways people attempt to meet those needs may be unsafe or of concern. For some individuals, this may include behaviours such as verbal or physical aggression, property damage, self-injury, socially disruptive or unsafe behaviours, absconding or wandering, withdrawal, or refusal. These behaviours can sometimes be linked to differences in communication, understanding, emotional regulation, or unmet needs.

Our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners work collaboratively with participants and the people in their lives to better understand the purpose or function of behaviour. It may be that a person’s behaviour is related to seeking attention, accessing a desired item or activity, avoiding or escaping a situation, or meeting a sensory need.

Once the underlying reasons for the behaviour are better understood, we can develop practical, person-centred strategies to reduce reliance on behaviours of concern and support the development of safer, more effective ways to communicate needs and achieve positive outcomes.

Our Approach to Positive Behaviour Support

Our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners approach to behaviour support is grounded in evidence-based practice and guided by the values of being neuro-affirming, trauma-informed, and person-centred.

  • Neuro-affirming
We recognise and respect neurological differences as a natural part of human diversity. Rather than focusing on “fixing” behaviours, we aim to understand each individual’s unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world. Our approach supports autonomy, dignity, and authentic self-expression, while building skills that are meaningful to the individual.
  • Trauma-informed
We acknowledge that past experiences, including trauma, can significantly impact behaviour. Our practitioners prioritise emotional safety, consistency, and trust, ensuring that supports are delivered in a way that avoids re-traumatisation. We work sensitively and collaboratively to understand each person’s experiences and respond with empathy and care.
  • Person-centred
The individual is at the centre of everything we do. We work in partnership with participants, their families, and support networks to ensure that supports are tailored to their goals, preferences, and strengths. We respect each person’s right to choice and control, and we are committed to empowering individuals to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Our Approach to Positive Outcomes

At Recruit, Connect & Care, we focus on building practical, sustainable solutions that reduce the need for behaviours of concern while improving quality of life.

A key part of this process is assessing the person’s environment and making meaningful adjustments where needed. This may include changes to routines, supports, expectations, or physical surroundings to reduce triggers and create more supportive, predictable environments.

We also look closely at identifying and teaching replacement behaviours. These are safer, more appropriate ways for a person to achieve the same outcome that the behaviour of concern was meeting. For example, this may involve developing communication skills, emotional regulation strategies, or functional ways to request help, attention, or access to preferred activities.

In some situations, restrictive practices may be considered to ensure the immediate safety of the individual or those around them. However, we are committed to ensuring that any use of restrictive practices is:

  • Clearly justified and compliant with NDIS guidelines
  • The least restrictive option available
  • Used for the shortest time possible

Our primary focus is always on reducing and eliminating the need for restrictive practices through skill development, capacity building, and increased understanding.

By working collaboratively with participants, families, and support networks, we aim to empower individuals with the tools and supports they need to achieve positive, meaningful outcomes.

Unconditional Positive Regard

A primary focus of our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners is developing and fostering a strong, trusting relationship with the person receiving support.

We practice unconditional positive regard, meaning we approach every individual with respect, empathy, and without judgement. We recognise that each person’s experiences, needs, and behaviours are valid, and we are committed to understanding them within the context of their unique life story.

By creating a safe and supportive environment, we enable individuals to feel heard, valued, and understood. This foundation of trust is essential in supporting meaningful change, building confidence, and encouraging skill development.

Our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners remain consistent, compassionate, and person-centred in their approach, working alongside each individual at their own pace to achieve positive outcomes.

The Positive Behaviour Support Process

At Recruit, Connect & Care, we follow a structured, collaborative process to ensure supports are tailored, effective, and responsive to each individual’s needs.

  1. Introduction & Relationship Building
We begin by getting to know the participant and the important people in their life. Building trust and strong relationships is a key foundation for effective positive behaviour support.
  2. Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
Our practitioners complete a comprehensive assessment to understand the purpose and function of behaviours of concern. This includes gathering information from the participant, their support network, and direct observation where appropriate.
  3. Interim Positive Behaviour Support Plan (within 30 days)
An interim plan is developed to provide immediate, practical strategies that support safety and consistency while we continue to build a deeper understanding.
  4. Interim Plan Training
We work closely with the participant’s support team to ensure they feel confident and capable in implementing the interim strategies in everyday environments.
  5. Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan (within 90 days)
Using insights from the assessment process, we develop a detailed, individualised plan that includes proactive strategies, skill-building supports, and long-term goals.
  6. Comprehensive Plan Training
We provide thorough training and guidance to ensure all supports understand the plan and can implement strategies effectively and consistently.

Ongoing Support & Review

However, it doesn’t end there. Behaviour change is not always linear, and strategies may need to evolve over time. We remain available to review what is and isn’t working, make adjustments, and provide ongoing guidance.

We continue to work alongside the participant and their care team, maintaining open communication and collaboration to ensure supports remain relevant, effective, and person-centred.
